Scion Wood from the Collection
Cuttings from the living archive.

I How a Variety Survives
A twig carried from one orchard to the next
Every apple in our collection began as a single twig carried from one orchard to another: in a saddlebag, a coat pocket, a letter.
Scion wood is how a variety survives. An apple never grows true from seed, so a centuries-old russet or an Appalachian keeper reaches a new hillside only one way: a living cutting, grafted onto new roots, unchanged.
Each winter, while the trees sleep, we plan to cut a limited amount of dormant wood from our in-ground heirloom trees here in Cedar Bluff, Virginia. Each stick will be cut by hand, labeled, and sent with a card recording where its tree stands in the collection.

II Availability
Small quantities, by inquiry
Coming soon, expected early 2027, by inquiry. Not yet available for sale while our Virginia plant-inspection licensing is completed.
Some of our trees are still young in the ground, so wood will be released gradually as they mature. We’ll write to everyone on the list before the winter cutting.
