I The Same Tree, Continued

Some trees aren’t on any list

The one by your grandmother’s porch. The apple your family has picked every October for three generations. The last tree standing on a homeplace that’s been sold.

An apple can’t be grown true from seed. The only way to carry a tree forward is to graft it: join a living cutting from the original onto new roots. The new tree isn’t a cousin or a lookalike. It’s the same tree, continued.

II How It Will Work

From winter wood to a young tree

  1. Deep winterFrom mid-January to early March, while the tree is dormant, a few pencil-thick shoots from last summer’s growth are cut, wrapped, and sent to the orchard. Where we can, we’ll come collect them ourselves.
  2. Early springEach cutting is hand-grafted onto hardy rootstock you choose: a full-sized tree like the original, or something smaller for a modern yard.
  3. ThenYour young tree is collected that spring as a fresh graft, or grown on at the orchard for a season, and goes home with a record of its origin.

A word of honesty.

Old trees give old wood, and not every graft takes. We’ll do everything grafting allows, and we’ll tell you plainly what we see in your wood.
