History & Stories
Rare Northern European variety. Limited English-language detail, but its Scandinavian origin suggests adaptation to cooler climates and shorter seasons. Interesting as a Nordic heritage type.
Folklore & Name
Old Danish variety. Original tree documented from the garden of the Jensen family in Dauglykke near Humlebæk. Name is simply the place of origin. Slow Food Ark of Taste variety; rare Northern European heritage apple.
Digging into the History
Below my own notes, here is what the old fruit books and today’s collections record about this apple, kept apart from the stories people tell.
What we know
Dauglykke (Danish Dauglykkæble) is listed on Slow Food's Ark of Taste. The original tree grew in the Jensen family's garden at Dauglykke, near Humlebæk in north Zealand, Denmark 1. Slow Food says it was first described by the pomologist Claus Matthiesen in Dansk Frugt, and notes that the fruit does not keep long 1.
What we think: stories & traditions
A garden apple. It is a Danish apple known from one family's garden 1. Like many Ark of Taste entries, it survives because collectors kept it going.
